Quercus Conservation is a building consultancy offering advice and guidance on the repair and upgrade of traditional and historic buildings. Through my services get advice on all aspects of older structures - damp, defects, repair, upgrade, thermal refurbishment and climate change adaptation. I am experienced in traditional and historic structures dating from the mediaeval period to the early 20th C. My standard ArchiPal products are aimed for the most popular questions from clients but I am happy to take questions on all areas of traditional construction methods and materials.
I take a conservation approach in any repair and refurbishment advice, resisting loss or original material. This is not just about keeping old stuff, but understanding what is defective and what is not, repairing not replacing, and managing disruption and reinstatement costs and conserving resources and carbon. It is also about retaining the textures, smells and patina of an older building. Climate change, and the resulting increases in rainfall and damaging storm events means a better appreciation of traditional building function is needed, including the reinstatement of features such as external renders, weathering details and passive ventialtion features like cupolas and chimneys. In addressing common defects such as damp, my approach goes into the reasons for such failures, often wider building fabric issues, and resists specific interventions to address symptoms alone.
